NODAL POWER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nodal set a calendar month trading record in power futures with traded volume of 266 million MWh, up 58% from August 2023.
  • Open interest at the end of August for power futures was 1.4 billion MWh.

NODAL ENVIRONMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nodal set a new all-time record on the exchange in environmental futures and options trading with volume of 105,571 lots, up 189% from August 2023.
  • Open Interest in environmental markets reached a record high of 380,647 lots in August, up 45% from August 2023.
  • Nodal Exchange and IncubEx announced the planned launch of new carbon and REC contracts.

Nodal Exchange achieves new August volume records in power (up 58%) & environmental (up 189%) markets

Nodal Exchange announced new power and environmental trading records in August 2024. In power, Nodal set a calendar month record for August with 266 million MWh of traded power futures volume in the month, up 58% from the prior year. Nodal continues to be the market leader in North American power futures having the majority of the open interest with 1.4 billion MWh.

Environmental futures and options on Nodal Exchange set a new all-time volume record of 105,571 lots in August, up 189% from 36,495 lots a year earlier. The monthly volume topped the prior record in July of 64,562 lots.

Open interest in the environmental product suite on Nodal ended the month at an all-time high of 380,647 lots, up 45% from 262,680 contracts a year earlier.

Nodal Exchange to launch new carbon and REC contracts in collaboration with IncubEx

Nodal Exchange and IncubEx announced the planned launch of a slate of new environmental futures contracts.

Pending regulatory review, Nodal plans to list the following futures on September 17, 2024:

  • Alberta TIER Emission Performance Credits
  • M-RETS CRS-Listed Canadian Sited Wind RECs Front and Back Half
  • ERCOT Reporting Year CRS-Listed Wind RECs
  • NAR Wind RECs
  • M-RETS Wind RECs
  • ERCOT Wind RECs
  • California Book and Claim RECs

The Alberta Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) Emission Performance Credits (EPC) futures contract physically delivers credits issued to obligated entities for the difference between their allocated and reported emissions for the compliance period.

Nodal also plans to list a set of new REC futures products that complement its current broad portfolio of REC futures and options.
